Rise of the Tomb Raider and its central villains have a dark tone to them, making it more brutal at times than what we have seen of the series to-date. However, for traditionalists, high-powered weaponsВ like shotguns and rifles will get the job done nicely. With LaraвЂ™s volatile arensol and choiceВ upgrades, just shooting a guy becomes gauche.

What turns this into a win in our books is that Lara can craft high-damage incendiaries like nail bombs, Molotov cocktails, smoke bombs and special ammo (thatВ can also be lit up) to decimate baddies in seconds. The third person shooter style of enemy engagement is the least inspired aspect of combat in Rise of the Tomb Raider. That means farming for these materials prior to battles can save youВ from dicey situations in the long run. Many of these upgrades can be crafted on the fly, allowing Lara to resupplyВ herself with poison arrows, instantly heal, and prep a Molotov (one ofВ our personal favorites). Lara can use saplings, hides, feathers, ore, bottles andВ cans to craft a wide range of objects including weapons upgrades, weapons themselves, andВ healing poultices.

As in the past LaraВ scavenges materials from the world around her, but now these materials are put to a better useВ then they were in the previous game. Rise of the Tomb Raider has made scavenging for materials worthwhile. There are times when you wait for Lara to move, but following your eye-roll you come toВ realize that it is in fact you who is in control. TheВ picture quality of many games usually varies between the cutscenes and the gameВ environment, but Tomb Raider is an exception, as it offers near seamless transitions between theВ two. To further the visual win, image quality is translated from the environment to the cutscenes. The most notable one for us were the snowВ environments where the snow made realistic crunching sounds, deep snow slowed movement,В and polar winds whipped all while Lara shivered. Hunting down all the collectable items andВ challenges becomes less like a chore as you truly begin to feel like youвЂ™re part of the world.В Crystal Dynamics tackles various types of environments in Rise of the Tomb Raider, all doneВ with a critical eye for detail and realism. Rise of the Tomb Raider is a very visually stunning game that provides aВ meticulously constructed explorable world. Snow-covered mountain tops, dark crypts, lush woods and decaying ruins are only some of theВ locals youвЂ™ll discover.
